SOF Projects & Programs

 

SOF has a wide variety of ongoing projects and programs include reforesting Fallbrook Land Conservancy preserves, the Downtown Treescape project, on-going maintenance of downtown trees, Adopt-a-Tree and Adopt-a-Road programs, educational programs, workshops, and cooperating with the FLC and other environmental agencies with their programs and projects.


The SOF Nursery

 

For the past several years Save Our Forest has been growing trees and plants in its own nursery. They are used to revegetate the Creekside Conservation area and several Fallbrook Land Conservancy preserves including Bonsall, Dinwiddie, Engel, Heller’s Bend, Los Jilgueros and Palomares Park. Plants from the nursery are also used for  educational programs with local schools.


Educational Programs

 

Save Our Forest presents an environmental  education program in cooperation with the Fallbrook Unified School District.  Each year, five schools in the district participate in the program, which is presented in two phases. The first year, fourth grade students hear a brief presentation in the classroom, which includes the following:

       -  The benefits of trees and shrubs in providing a more healthful environment.

       -  The importance of conserving water by planting native and drought tolerant plants which can be beautiful.

       -  The importance of giving back to your community. 

The students then learn to plant seedlings in one-gallon containers that are nurtured and maintained in the SOF nursery. The following year, these same students, now fifth-graders, travel to a preserve or other location in Fallbrook to plant the native plants.


SOF Funding

 

“Treescape Fallbrook”

This is the name given the most significant source of funding for SOF projects. This program was SOF’s first venture into grant applications for the downtown Community Forest. Since a   humble beginning in 1995, nine grants have brought $233,951.00 to the Fallbrook Community Treescape Project.

 

“Adopt-a-Tree.”

As a part of the “Treescape  Fallbrook” SOF has had a downtown  tree adoption program in place for many years. How it works is that generous  residents donate funds toward having a tree and plaque donated in a name that  they designate. These funds covers expenses such as pruning, fertilizing, insect  control and watering. Since Fallbrook is not incorporated, this is a  particularly valuable maintenance service for downtown trees that otherwise  would not be provided. 
 

Legacy Endowment Fund - for Fallbrook Treescape.

An endowment fund has been created for  the Fallbrook Treescape Project.  This endowment fund will provide annual income to help cover project maintenance costs.  The amount of income depends on the value of the fund.  Donations for this fund can help it grow and increase the revenues for this important beautification project. Volunteerism

 

The success of the Save Our Forest organization rests entirely on its enthusiastic and committed volunteers who have contributed  thousands of hours to SOF programs and projects. New volunteers are always welcome!

Meetings:

The regular meeting for Save Our Forest is on the fourth Monday of the month 7:00 p.m. at the Palomares House.    

Volunteer Work Parties:

Save Our Forest work parties meet on the third Wednesday and the last Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The groups meet at the Village Square (corner of Main St. & Alvarado) and work for 2 hours.  Bring shovel, hand clippers, and loppers, if possible. Other supplies will be furnished.  People interested in the community work of  maintaining downtown trees can call Jackie Heyneman at 728-5395.

Adopt-A-Road:

SOF invites community members to join their Adopt-A-Road program.  The group meets the second Sunday of each month to pick up trash on Old 395 from E. Mission to Hwy 76. Meet at the entrance to Pala Mesa Resort at Tecolate Dr. at 8:00 a.m.
